Security Community

Austin's security community skews younger and more technical than Houston or Dallas — it's the researchers, red teamers, and security engineers who moved here for the tech scene and never left. Dell, NXP, Apple, Google, and a dense layer of venture-backed security startups all have meaningful Austin presences. UT Austin's computer science and security research programs feed a constant stream of technically deep practitioners into the local market. The state government IT security apparatus and the Texas Military Department add a public sector dimension that most tech hubs don't have.

Card House Culture

Austin's card house culture is tied closely to the tech and poker overlap that already exists in the city — a lot of security people here already play. Community games run tighter here, 9–12 players, and tend to feel more like a regular home game that moved to a card house than a formal organized event. That's a feature, not a bug.

Why Austin

Austin is where the technical depth lives. The security professionals here are, on average, closer to the code — red teamers, penetration testers, security engineers, and researchers who ended up in leadership roles without losing their practitioner instincts.

That makes for a different kind of card game. The conversation at break in Austin is more likely to be about a recent CVE or a CTF writeup than a compliance framework. That’s not true everywhere.

The startup ecosystem adds another dimension — founders, early employees at funded security companies, and the VC community that backs them all overlap here in ways that are genuinely useful. Hacker Summer Camp people tend to come from Austin in disproportionate numbers. Community games here feed directly into the flagship event waitlist.
